Guest and household consent burden

Several TV agreements treat the living-room set as a household device and ask one person to obtain consent from everyone else whose viewing or voice might be collected, guests included, in practice if not in wording.

Smart TVs sit in shared rooms. The legal text often still assumes a single “you” who can speak for everyone who walks past the screen. **What the clause is doing.** LG’s Viewing Information, Voice Information, advertising, Who.Where.What?, and Smart Media Product Privacy Policy texts each include a representation that the person clicking Agree has obtained consent from other household members. Alphonso’s Smart TV policy is explicit that viewing data is associated with a *household IP address*, not a person. **What it does not do.** None of the captured LG texts mention guests, roommates who never saw the setup screen, children as a distinct class in that paragraph, or a duty to re-consent when new people start using the TV. 2026 reporting on LG’s layered agreements highlighted this gap: the buyer is deputized as the household’s privacy officer, with no practical way to notify a weekend guest. **What to look for on other brands.** Hisense’s Enhanced Viewing notice talks about ads on “other devices that share the IP address.” Samsung’s on-TV Viewing Information notice was not captured here; Consumer Reports and the Texas AG petition describe ACR covering connected devices. Samba’s ToS asks the person who enables Smart TV Services to represent they can consent for *all users of that television*. Samba’s Privacy Handbook says enabling the product collects “combined household’s viewership information.” Sony’s support FAQ is opt-in on paper; it does not reprint that household-authorization clause.
